Light Fixture Installation Across 34 DFW Communities
Replacing a dated light fixture is one of the fastest ways to change the feel of a room — and one of the most underestimated DIY risks. The job looks simple: disconnect the old fixture, connect the new one. In practice, improper wire connections, mismatched dimmer and bulb combinations, overloaded junction boxes, and heavy fixtures hung from standard boxes cause problems that range from flickering lights to real safety hazards. Done correctly, a fixture replacement takes less than an hour and looks exactly right. Done incorrectly, it often has to be redone at additional cost.
Fixtures We Install & Replace
- ✓ Flush mount & semi-flush mount — bedroom, hallway, and living area ceiling fixtures
- ✓ Pendant lights — kitchen islands, dining areas, entryways
- ✓ Chandeliers — dining rooms, foyers, stairwells
- ✓ Vanity light bars — bathroom above-mirror fixtures, single and multi-bulb
- ✓ Recessed lights — remodel cans at existing wired locations, no attic access required
- ✓ Outdoor fixtures — porch lights, wall sconces, garage entry lights
- ✓ Dimmer switch upgrades — paired with compatible fixtures and bulbs
- ✓ Under-cabinet lighting — plug-in and hardwired LED strip or puck lights
Our scope: existing wired locations.
We install and replace fixtures at locations that already have wiring in place. New circuit installation, panel work, and running wire to new locations require a licensed electrician. If your project needs that level of work, we can refer you to a trusted partner and handle the fixture installation once the electrical rough-in is complete.
The Details That Make the Difference
Junction box weight rating — standard boxes hold up to 35 lbs. Heavier chandeliers and pendants require a fan-rated or chandelier-rated box. We check before mounting.
Dimmer compatibility — LED dimmers are not universal. Using the wrong dimmer with a fixture or bulb causes flickering, buzzing, and early failure. We match the dimmer to the fixture and confirm bulb compatibility before installation.
Wire connections — loose or incorrect wire connections are the most common cause of fixture failure and the most common fire risk in DIY electrical work. Every connection we make is tight, correct, and properly insulated.
Outdoor wet vs. damp rating — outdoor fixtures must be rated for their specific exposure. A damp-rated fixture works under a covered porch. A wet-rated fixture is required where rain can directly hit it. Using the wrong rating voids the warranty and creates a hazard.
Our Light Fixture Installation Process
Every fixture installation follows the same sequence regardless of the fixture type. The steps that homeowners most often skip — verifying the box rating and confirming dimmer compatibility — are the ones that cause the most callbacks.
- Assess the existing fixture and location — we examine the current fixture, junction box, wiring, and switch configuration before removing anything. Surprises discovered during installation cost more to resolve than ones caught before.
- Verify junction box weight rating — the box must support the weight of the new fixture. Standard boxes handle up to 35 lbs. Heavier fixtures require a rated box upgrade, which we address before proceeding.
- Turn off the circuit and verify with a tester — the breaker is switched off and the wires are tested with a non-contact voltage tester before any connections are touched. No exceptions.
- Remove the old fixture cleanly — the existing fixture is removed without damaging the ceiling finish. If patching or touch-up is needed around the new fixture’s canopy, we note it before proceeding.
- Assemble and mount the new fixture — the mounting bracket, canopy, and fixture body are assembled per the manufacturer’s instructions. Wires are connected correctly, secured, and seated in the box before the canopy is closed.
- Install dimmer switch if requested — if a dimmer is part of the scope, we install a compatible model and confirm that the fixture and bulbs are rated for dimming before closing the switch plate.
- Restore power and test fully — the circuit is restored and the fixture is tested: on/off, dimming range if applicable, and any other functions. If anything is not right, we resolve it before calling the job complete.
- Clean up completely — packaging, old fixture hardware, wire clippings, and any debris are removed. The area is left clean.
Recessed Lighting Without the Mess
Remodel recessed cans install from below through a small hole in the drywall — no attic access, no major ceiling work. They clip into place and connect to the existing wiring at the location. The result is a clean, built-in look without a renovation.
We confirm the ceiling type, existing wiring, and insulation situation before recommending this approach. Not every ceiling is suitable, and we tell you before starting rather than after cutting.
Replacing Multiple Fixtures?
Updating all the flush mounts in a home, replacing vanity bars in multiple bathrooms, or adding dimmers throughout — batching these in a single visit is considerably more efficient than scheduling separate trips. The per-fixture time and cost both decrease when we can move through a home systematically.
Also Installing a Ceiling Fan?
If you are adding a ceiling fan in another room, see our Ceiling Fan Installation page. We can combine both in a single visit.
Light Fixture Installation: Your Questions Answered
What types of light fixtures can you install?
We install and replace flush mount and semi-flush mount ceiling fixtures, pendant lights, chandeliers, bathroom vanity bars, recessed lights using remodel cans, outdoor porch and sconce fixtures, and under-cabinet lighting. All work is at existing wired locations. New circuit installation requires a licensed electrician — if that is part of your project, we can refer you to a trusted partner and handle the fixture work once the electrical is ready.
Can you install recessed lighting without cutting into the ceiling?
In most cases, yes. Remodel recessed cans install through a small circular hole in the drywall from below and clip into place without attic access or major ceiling work. The result looks identical to new-construction recessed lighting. We assess the ceiling type, existing wiring, and insulation before confirming this approach is right for your situation.
How much does light fixture installation cost in DFW?
Cost depends on the fixture type, its weight and mounting complexity, and whether a dimmer upgrade or junction box change is part of the scope. A straightforward flush mount or vanity bar replacement is the most affordable. Chandeliers and heavy pendants require more time and sometimes a box upgrade. We provide flat-rate pricing before starting.

Do I need special bulbs for a dimmer switch?
Yes. Not all LED bulbs are dimmer-compatible, and pairing a non-dimmable bulb with a dimmer causes flickering, buzzing, and shortened bulb life. When we install a dimmer, we confirm that the fixture and bulbs are compatible with the specific dimmer model. We recommend dimmable LED bulbs rated for that dimmer. Getting this combination right from the start eliminates the most common dimmer complaints.
Can a heavy chandelier be installed where a standard light was?
It depends on the ceiling box. Standard junction boxes are rated for fixtures up to 35 lbs. Heavier chandeliers require a fan-rated or chandelier-rated box. In most cases the box can be upgraded without major ceiling work, using an expandable brace installed through the existing hole. We assess the box rating before committing to the installation and upgrade it if needed.
Is outdoor light fixture installation different from indoor?
The process is the same but the fixture rating matters more. Outdoor fixtures must be rated for their specific exposure: damp-rated for covered areas like porches and patios, wet-rated for locations directly exposed to rain. Using an indoor or damp-rated fixture in a wet location creates a safety hazard and voids the warranty. We confirm the correct rating for your specific location before installation.
How long does light fixture installation take?
Most single fixture replacements take 30 minutes to one hour. Recessed light installation, chandelier hanging, and dimmer switch work take longer depending on what is involved. Replacing multiple fixtures in a home in a single visit is considerably more efficient than separate trips and reduces the overall cost.
