What We Build
The fireplace is often the natural anchor of a living room — but without the right surround and built-ins, it can feel like a missed opportunity. We design and build custom carpentry that turns the fireplace wall into something the room is actually organized around. Every project is sized and styled to fit your specific space.
- Custom mantel design & installation — From a simple painted wood mantel shelf to a full floor-to-ceiling mantel with pilasters and crown detail, we build and install to fit your fireplace dimensions and the room’s architectural style. Traditional, transitional, farmhouse, or modern — we match the design to the home.
- Built-in shelving & cabinet surround — Flanking built-ins on either side of the fireplace add storage, display space, and visual weight that grounds the entire wall. We design the cabinet and shelf layout to your storage needs and build it as a seamless, furniture-grade installation — not a kit assembly.
- Shiplap, board & batten, and tile surrounds — The wall treatment around the fireplace sets the entire tone of the space. We install shiplap, board and batten, or tile surrounds that frame the firebox and extend the design from floor to ceiling or to the mantel line, depending on what the room calls for.
- Entertainment center integration — When the TV lives above or beside the fireplace, the built-in design needs to accommodate it properly. We include TV niches sized to your screen, wire management routed cleanly through the structure, and storage below for media components — all built into the fireplace wall as one cohesive design.
- Painted & stained finish options — We deliver the project paint-ready or fully finished, depending on your preference. Painted finishes in any color — crisp white, dramatic dark, or anything in between — and stained finishes that highlight the wood grain are both options we handle in-house.
Why the Fireplace Wall Deserves More Than a Mantel Shelf
From First Conversation to Finished Wall
Custom carpentry requires more upfront planning than a standard repair — here is how we move from idea to installation.
-
1. Design consultation
We visit the space, take measurements, and discuss your style direction, how you want to use the wall (display, storage, TV, or all three), and what finish you have in mind. If you have inspiration photos, bring them — they help us understand the look you are after far better than descriptive words alone. We leave the consultation with everything we need to develop the layout.
-
2. Layout and material selection
We develop a proposed layout — dimensions, cabinet configuration, shelf spacing, mantel profile — and walk you through material options. Poplar and paint-grade pine for painted finishes; select hardwoods for stained work; MDF for painted panel work where stability matters. We confirm the design and materials before anything is ordered or built.
-
3. Fabrication
Components are built to the confirmed dimensions — mantel parts, cabinet boxes, face frames, doors and shelves if included. Fitting custom carpentry to an existing fireplace and wall requires precise dimensioning; we measure twice and build to fit, not to a standard size that gets shimmed into place.
-
4. Installation
Built-ins are secured to wall studs and, where needed, to the floor — not just to drywall. The mantel is set to code-required clearances from the firebox opening. Shiplap or board and batten is applied to the wall, scribed to the ceiling and adjacent trim. Every joint is tight, every surface is plumb and level before we move to finish.
-
5. Finishing and final walkthrough
Nail holes are filled, seams are caulked, and the surface is sanded smooth before paint or stain goes on. We apply finish coats until coverage and sheen are consistent across the entire installation. Before we close out the job, we walk through the finished wall with you and make sure every detail meets your expectations.

Fireplace Built-in Questions We Hear Often
Do you design the built-ins or do I need to bring my own design?
We work both ways. Many homeowners come with inspiration photos from Pinterest or Houzz and we translate those into buildable plans that fit their specific fireplace and wall dimensions. Others prefer to start from scratch — in that case we discuss your style preferences, how you want to use the space, and what finish direction you are going, then develop a layout from there. You do not need an architect or interior designer — this is part of what we do.
What materials work best for a fireplace surround?
For the mantel and built-in cabinet sections — which are set back from the firebox — poplar, MDF, or paint-grade pine are common choices that take paint beautifully and hold up well indoors. For shiplap or board and batten accent walls, pine or MDF both work depending on budget. For the surround immediately around the firebox opening, tile, stone, or a non-combustible material is required by code — we coordinate this as part of the project scope.
Can you integrate a TV above the fireplace into the built-in design?
Yes, and we do this regularly. The built-in design can include a dedicated TV niche sized to your screen, wire management channels routed through the wall or built-in structure, and storage below for media components. One consideration worth discussing: mounting a TV directly above a working wood-burning or gas fireplace exposes it to heat that can shorten its lifespan. We can discuss placement options and, where needed, coordinate with your electrician on outlet and conduit routing before we build.
How long does a fireplace built-in project typically take?
Most fireplace built-in and surround projects run two to four days of on-site work, depending on scope. A mantel replacement with minimal wall work is on the shorter end. A full floor-to-ceiling built-in with flanking cabinets, a shiplap accent wall, and a painted finish takes longer — paint alone adds a day for proper dry time between coats. We give you a clear timeline before starting so you can plan around the work.
Is a wood mantel or surround safe near a working fireplace?
Yes, when installed to code. Building codes specify minimum clearance distances between combustible materials like wood and the firebox opening — typically 6 inches from the sides and 12 inches above the opening for mantels that project more than 1.5 inches from the face. We follow these clearances on every project. For the immediate surround around the firebox opening, we use non-combustible materials such as tile, stone, or metal. If you have a gas fireplace insert, clearance requirements may differ — we verify the specifications for your unit before building.
